Reflections: Facing the Mirror, finding Ourselves

When filmaker Michael Hyman set out to create Reflections, he wanted to push the boundaries of Andy Warhol’s iconic 1960s Screen Tests. Warhol asked his subjects to sit silently for three minutes before his lens. Hyman raised the stakes. “I thought it would be interesting to take it a step further and have the subjects look into a mirror at their own reflection,” he says. “I wanted to see how they would respond to four minutes of staring at themselves, face to face, without distraction.”

New LGBTQ+ Series Reflects on Identity, Beauty, and Self-Worth
By Ben Nelson
Filmmaker Michael Hyman unveils Reflections, a daring new video series that turns the camera—and the mirror—on identity, beauty, and self-worth. Shot on 16mm film and inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic 1960s Screen Tests, the 16 short films invite participants to confront the most intimate and unflinching subject of all: themselves.
Where Warhol’s cultural icons sat still for three minutes before his lens, Hyman raises the stakes. Each Reflections film captures four minutes of silence as subjects face their own mirrored image. The result is both minimalist and deeply revealing. It is a cinematic experiment in discomfort, vulnerability, and transformation.

Turning the Lens—and the Mirror—on Queer Identity
New LGBTQ video series reimagines Andy Warhol’s iconic Screen Tests for a contemporary audience
By Ben Nelson
Filmmaker Michael Hyman’s new LGBTQIA+ video series Reflections is both intimate and radical in its simplicity. The 16mm project, produced under Hyman’s queer arts organization Out on Fire Media, reimagines Andy Warhol’s iconic Screen Tests for a contemporary audience: one living in a world of selfies, filters, and fleeting viral fame. Yet where Warhol’s subjects merely sat before a static camera, Hyman adds the twist of a mirror. Each short film features a subject seated alone for four silent minutes, facing their own reflection. What unfolds is an unfiltered study of identity, beauty, and vulnerability; told through stillness rather than speech.

Shot on 16mm film and inspired by Andy Warhol’s iconic 1960s Screen Tests, the sixteen shorts challenge participants representing a diverse cross-section of the LGBTQIA+ community to confront their own reflection in silence for four minutes.
For Jedlica, a well-known advocate for plastic surgery who has built a life in Los Angeles as an artist, content creator, and real estate designer, the experience was a powerful act of self-love and a natural extension of his lifelong exploration of image, authenticity, and reinvention. He explains more.
